In Less Than a Year, SolarCity and Tesla Runs Island on Solar Power

Intro

Elon Musk’s Tesla has made a name for itself as being a formidable force in any industry it chooses to invest in, it may be relatively young in that area, but it’s a force to reckon with as it can beat you at your game faster than you can ever imagine.

Tesla just closed the deal on SolarCity, and it’s obviously not wasting time to show what a combined force of the two power lords will be like. Elon Musk has been a very big fan of solar power, seeing that he plans running his factories on solar power, and even create roofs from solar cells.

Tesla has now revealed a massive solar energy microgrid it’s running on the island of Ta’u. The company revealed that the solar power plant produces so much energy that it’s just about 1.4 megawatts of this output that cover all the electrical needs of the island.

In addition to the 5,328 solar panels on the island, Tesla has about 60 of its own batteries that store an average of 6 megawatt-hours of energy at a time. Ta’u Island is pretty sunny, so you can expect that the packs can offer days of uninterrupted power even if there isn’t sunlight for a long period of time.
