For thousands of employees who work at IBM, the capacity to telecommute is a key standpoint of their employment. But the company said on Friday that it’s taking away that advantage for a significant number of them.
The innovation giant has been a pioneer as far as giving employees a chance to telecommute and has boasted about the investment funds and expanded profitability that have come about. Around 40% of its almost 400,000 representatives worldwide did not have a customary office, the company said in 2007, which was the last time it released such information.
But now the company is changing its policy, and a large number of its workers should reacquaint themselves with office life.
“In many fields, such as software development and digital marketing, the nature of work is changing, which requires new ways of working,” said a statement from the company. “We are bringing small, self-directed agile teams in these fields together.” The policy change was reported earlier by the Wall Street Journal.
IBM declined to state what number of workers should come back to the workplace, or where they will be found. It said some will at present have the capacity to work remotely.
By far most of the specialists who have were requested to come back to the workplace have consented to do as such, IBM said. The company added that a few representatives would lose their employments if they’re unwilling to work in workplaces.
It wasn’t that long ago that was touting the advantages of having so a large number of its specialists work remotely.
In the vicinity of 1995 and 2008, the company said it decreased its office space by 78 million square feet, and that 58 million square feet of that space was sold for a pick up of $1.9 billion.
It’s not clear the amount it should spend to get representatives back to the workplace.
IBM is not by any means the only tech company to draw some of its workers back. The CEO of Yahoo Marissa Mayer started a controversy there four years ago when she additionally changed the policy to take work-at-home representatives back to the workplace.
